Quantum computing presents new challenges to modern cryptography. Popular public-key algorithms like RSA and ECC are based on hard mathematical problems for traditional computers and are widely used. Shor’s algorithm could be used by a quantum computer of sufficient power to break these systems, compromising electronic signatures, key exchange and identity authentication.
Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) involves developing cryptography algorithms that are resistant to attacks from classical and quantum computers. PQC can run on conventional computing hardware, unlike quantum cryptography.
In 2024, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published three major PQC standards:
| Standard | Algorithm | Primary Purpose |
| FIPS 203 | ML-KEM (Kyber) | Establishing shared secrets |
| FIPS 204 | ML-DSA (Dilithium) | Digital signatures |
| FIPS 205 | SLH-DSA (SPHINCS+) | Hash-based digital signatures |
The ML-KEM enables parties to agree on a shared secret to communicate securely and ML-DSA and SLH-DSA are digital signature schemes to authenticate and verify the integrity of data.
Hardware security devices will be crucial in safeguarding cryptographic keys and facilitating secure authentication as post-quantum cryptography moves closer to practical implementation.

PQC Algorithms of ML-KEM & ML-DSA Explained
Excelsecu’s PQC-enabled PKI and FIDO security devices under development is designed to work with ML-DSA for electronic signatures and ML-KEM for key encapsulation and shared-secret generation. These features contribute to the adoption of post-quantum cryptography in hardware-based security applications.
Transitioning to PQC involves more than replacing existing algorithms. To counter future quantum risks, organizations should evaluate their current cryptography systems and create a migration plan.
As cryptographic standards continue to evolve, systems must be able to adapt to new algorithms and security requirements. This capability is known as cryptographic agility, which is essential for future security and a smoother transition to post-quantum cryptography.
Organizations can design more robust security systems for the quantum age by preparing ahead of time and investigating PQC-compatible hardware.
