'Secure for More': A Battery-Free Fingerprint Smart Card That Actually Puts Security Within Reach

Smart cards have been around for decades but honestly, the real question isn't how far they've come. It's whether technological progress can actually serve more people. Here's what we set out to do: integrate fingerprint biometric authentication into battery-freesmart cards. No gimmicks — just technology that actually works for more people.

Fingerprint Biometric features add another layer of assurance when verifying who you are, especially when smart cards evolve beyond a single-purpose credential into multifunctional devices. Imagine you live in a rural area, where the nearest town offering sizable financial or commercial services is at least one hour away. However, in today’s increasingly digitalized society, you still need secure authentication and transaction services.

 

By reducing component complexity, battery-free biometric smart cards can lower costs and minimize potential risks of malfunction compares to the last generation. This makes secure authentication and transaction more accessible and practical for people in remote areas and communities with limited infrastructure.

 

Our goal is “Secure for More”, and this is exactly what we aim to achieve with our new generation of fingerprint biometric smart cards — the eSecuCard-F310 and F320. Built on the Java Card platform, the F310 and F320 can support multiple applications, including FIDO2, OTP, PIV, and OpenPGP, allowing one card to serve different authentication and security needs. We hope to make technological advancements reach more people’s lives, and we recognize that this goal is also shared by many socially-responsible financial institutions, governments, and organizations supporting refugees or other underserved communities. Beyond identity verification, biometric smart cards can also support secure transaction authorization, digital wallet applications, and hardware-based protection of sensitive credentials. By combining biometric authentication with secure hardware, they provide a trusted foundation for applications where both identity and transaction security are critical.

 

Our technical approach has resonated with many across regions, institutions from Europe, central Asia, and pacific island nations showed great interest in our solution, even when we are in sample production stage. Their engagement demonstrates that the demand for secure, accessible digital identity solutions extends beyond geographical boundaries.
